YPRES – the city – Belgium

Ypres or Ieper – to give it its Flemish name ( and that after all is where it is ! ) – is a remarkable rebuild of an important and wealthy medieval town but which was destroyed almost totally in World War One. The Ypres Salient – a bulge around Ypres which existed for the entire war as the British and Empire troops defended at huge cost against the Germans – meant the city was flattened by German shelling. But now apart from eating well on Belgium’s favourite mussels or waffles or chocolate there’s a great deal to see – the Cloth Hall, Cathedral, city moats and parks.
