WINSTON CHURCHILL – Blenheim Palace – updated 2017

Winston Churchill was born in 1874 in the middle of a posh Ball being held in his ancestral home – Blenheim Palace – in Oxfordshire. Churchill was a descendant of John Churchill, the 1st Duke of Marlborough, who defeated the armies of French King Louis XIV in a campaign in the Low Countries in the first years of the 18th century. The final battle was at Blindheim in Bavaria – corrupted to Blenheim by the English. A grateful nation gave John Churchill the funds to build the greatest palace in Britain. So as the toffs of the Victorian era were dancing – Churchill arrived rather unexpectedly in a room which was being used as a cloakroom. The bed he was born on was covered in coats, cloaks and feather-boas !
