Vienna is one of Europe’s most historic and most appealing cities. It was the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and has a long and important history. Vienna was the seat of the Habsburgs who ruled the Holy Roman Empire for centuries. The Hofburg Palace just grew and grew and acquired ever more art – paintings as well as great sculpture. The city is bursting with other palaces too – don’t miss the Belvedere with its beautiful gardens and art gallery showing Gustav Klimt’s “The Kiss”. Back in the centre of Vienna there’s the fabulous Stephansdom cathedral, lots of other history, great shopping and all those fine cakes. You can even watch them making the creamy delights in one shop we’ll visit. There’s been more recent and less glorious history to absorb… Hitler announced the Anschluss – the amalgamation of Germany and Austria from a balcony at the Hofburg. Vienna was a city of creative and cultured Jews whose horrific demise is marked. This guide comes in three longish parts – two parts around the centre and out to the Belvedere following the main threads of the city’s history and the third part looks at the part the Habsburgs and their palaces played. Vienna is a great city in which to indulge yourself ! Between them the three guides total an hour and a half of lively, on-location exploration of Vienna. You won’t catch me re-writing someone else’s guidebook and recording bits of it in my bedroom ! CitySounds.Travel says what it is !
