Rudesheim has all the makings of a shameless tourist trap but if you join in the wine-induced jollity then it’s a pretty little place. The narrow alleys are full of people eating and drinking, singing and carousing in a very Germanic way. There’s a fascinating museum of mechanical musical instruments and automata. You should take the cable car up high into the hills to the huge monument whioch commemorates Germany’s unification in the 1870s.
