Riga is the capital and largest city of Latvia. With 700,000 inhabitants Riga is the largest city of the Baltic states and home to more than one third of Latvia’s population. The city lies on the Gulf of Riga, at the mouth of the Daugava River. It has some fabulous medieval buildings – churches, the House of the Blackheads ( doesn’t that sound mysterious ..), the Three Brothers and an amazing collection of the finest Art Nouveau buildings in Europe. Riga is a real eye-opener ! There are dozens of good restaurants and a beer culture going back to the German influence from the days of Hanseatic League. There’s an important Jewish Holocaust museum; a brilliant Stalinist-style building like those great spikey towers the Soviet dictator built all over Russia and his occupied lands … and don’t forget one of Europe’s biggest markets. Part of it is within the four, enormous, former Zeppelin hangars… Riga is a proper little gem !
