Mons has a lot of very strong medieval events it holds each year. One of them is the Lumecon. Eight metre wicker dragon. Huge crowds with King of Belgium watching. City Hall from 1450. Berlaymont family lived here. British Duke of Marlborough fought Battle of Malplaquet here, part of the campaign which defeated Louis XIV. In 1914 the first conflict of World War I was here between German and British troops. Very moving WWI museum. Vincent Van Gogh began to paint here. Golden Arc paraded annually pulled by six brewery horses. Duke of Wellington defeats Napoleon finally at Waterloo thirty miles away. Less than two hours from Calais.
