Guerande is a tiny, medieval walled city just north of the mouth of the River Loire in southern Brittany. It has stacks of its own character and history but is bordered by huge salt marshes which make one of France’s top two brands of sea salt. These you can visit and find out how it’s evaporated. It’s also close to the pretty Breton seaside resort of Le Croisic – served quite miraculously by TGV from Paris !! Just north of Guerance are vast, freshwater marshes and the regional natural parc of La Briere. This is where you’ll find unbelievably unspoilt villages and most of France’s thatched cottages. These two guides run to fifty-three minutes between them.
