BASQUE COUNTRY, GUERNICA – Spain

The stunningly unconventional Guggenheim Museum on the river in Bilbao has revived the region’s tourism product. Bilbao buzzes with energy now that it has traded it’s old industrial past for a cool tourism present. Interesting coastal villages with Atlantic coast surfing and fish restaurants. Guernica – to give it the correct Basque spelling, Gernika – is the town bombed by Nazi aircraft during the Spanish Civil War in 1937. The Nazi Condor Legion was helping fascist dictator Franco to overturn the legitimate Spanish republican government. Guernica has a Peace Museum which is very moving, It’s the political heart of Basque independence. With 2013 updates this runs to nearly twenty-two minutes.
